G. Derek Weiss, MD, FACS, FASMBSDr. Weiss is a Louisville native and a board-certified general surgeon and Certified Center of Excellence Bariatric Surgeon who has been in practice since 1994. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Dartmouth College where he majored in Biochemistry. He graduated Cum Laude from The University of Louisville School of Medicine, finishing in the top 10% of his class and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He did his surgical training (residency) at Emory University in Atlanta, where he worked under Dr. John Hunter, a renowned leader in advanced laparoscopy and previous President of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
In 2002, after eight years in the private practice of General Surgery and Clinical Instructor in Surgery with the University of Louisville, Dr. Weiss decided to focus his practice entirely on patients with weight loss concerns.
Dr. Weiss is a member and Fellow of The American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons, The American College of Surgeons, The American Medical Association, The Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, Kentucky Medical Association, the Greater Louisville Medical Society, and The Lexington Medical Society.
In 2003, Dr. Weiss formed Bluegrass Bariatric Surgical Associates. Since the formation of Bluegrass Bariatrics in 2003, over 6000 primary minimally invasive bariatric surgeries have been performed and bariatric surgery continues to remain the exclusive focus of their practice. Their excellent results have lead to their expansion throughout the state. Our doctors are proud to be able to offer the safest, 100% minimally invasive, state of the art weight loss surgery throughout the Commonwealth. We are the only Bariatric Surgical practice devoted entirely to weight loss surgery and the only surgeons who have met the stringent criteria to be BLIS surgeons.

Dr. Nwanguma, M.D.
Dr. Nwanguma joined BBSA August 2012 as our main surgeon in the Bowling Green office. He is a highly trained bariatric surgeon; attending Temple University School of Medicine, completing his general surgery residency at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and obtaining fellowship training at the world renowned University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Program. As a fellow, and attending surgeon, Dr. Nwanguma has performed hundreds of bariatric surgical cases.
